Being a good Jewish mother, my mom introduced me to Neil Diamond from a young age. Unfortunately, her influence only stuck as far as his Christmas album, and I do enjoy that particular bit of irony. The Christmas Album has long been one of my favorites during the holidays, though I’ve never quite convinced T.
Neil has sort of a similar vocal style to Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, which of course means his Christmas album is easy to listen to and puts you in a warm, fuzzy Christmas spirit. His arrangements are high drama, like you would expect of the early 1990s, which is kind of a niche style but are actually really fun (if a tad cheesy) in the context of holiday music. My favorite track was always “O Holy Night,” with the dramatic, colorful orchestration and big choral climax.
What’s not to love? I submit to you, nothing.
